The "humans as Gaia's brain" metaphor feels very, very strained to me.
We are far from being a central control system from all of Gaia's functionalities.

If Gaia has a brain and we are it, then it's intelligence has recently gone
through a major change. Inter-human communication has jumped exponentially
with the development and proliferation of electronics and particularly the
internet. Global population rises as does average intelligence and
communication. It looks suspiciously like "waking up" to me.
