Yes. Eliezer replied (and I paraphrase) that "paperclip monster"
stands in for goals that we don't understand also. The idea isn't that
the monster will drive towards some incredibly stupid goal, but rather
its motivations and aims will be for reasons we don't understand.
This could result in destructive behaviour that looks stupid, we don't
understand, and is single-minded.
