As predicted by some of you, these people are indeed associated with
the ideas of Terence McKenna, in fact a speaker at their conference is
none other than Terence's brother Dennis. This surprised me as the
information page for the Live Journal community where all this is taking
place is full of links to KurzweilAI, intelligence.org, yudkowsky.net and so on.
As the concept of the singularity is already viewed as rather fringe,
it may be worth keeping an eye out for this kind of thing, least the
the association with new age thinking takes root in the public mind.
After all, the new age movement has a massive media presence with
whole sections of book shops dedicated to the topic. It would only
take a few prominent new age authors to adopt the singularity, and
our already precarious public image would be seriously damaged.
