A 747's motors are stronger and needs to be stronger, than those of a nuclear submarine.
Not to mention, that the fall down of a nuclear powered plane, would be a messy thing.
Not to mention all those Green protesters at the landing sites.
Almost every 1960's optimistic SF example is fatally flawed and therefore isn't good for the argument we have here.
