Oh, it is perfectly defensible. Quite aside from being a possible
eye-opener to the dangers of nuclear terrorism, and being
entertaining, none other than Bruce Schneier held a "movie plot
contest" (http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2006/04/announcing_movi.html)
in which he solicited thousands of terrorist plot proposals - which I
will note were specifically intended to be far more realistic and
achievable than obtaining and being able to use a megaton nuke
("Assume an attacker profile on the order of 9/11: 20 to 30 unskilled
people, and about $500,000 with which to buy skills, equipment,
etc.").

But no doubt the example of a world-renowned security expert will not
affect your opinion that these mental exercises are "ridiculously
warped".
