I did it sort of the other way round, back in my teenage years, on Pilatus
(height 7000 feet IIRC): humped up the first two thirds on foot, then
stopped at the cable car station, because the last third was steep enough
you'd need to be a rock climber. It was fun at the top! Cold enough to drill
in the whole 'temperature drops as you get higher' thing, though I didn't
notice a difference in air pressure.
