I'm somewhat in the same boat as you. I'm on this list because I find the
idea of a singularity fascinating, and I don't really have any other way to
discuss transhumanist ideas as a whole.

The singularity is very much something I *want* to think will happen, simply
due to the way things are going with plain-old humanity at the moment, but
for the same reasons I think it's not very likely. But then again this is my
attitude towards the explosive, AI-generated idea of a singularity put
forward by, for example, the SIAI.

If you broaden your definition of what constitutes a singularity I would say
it becomes more likely, but the SIAI seems to represent the mainstream view
when the term " singularity" is used without modifiers.

I would also agree with you that this mailing list does lack people on the
cutting edge, but even so I still enjoy the ideas that are toyed around with
here.
